ISS Proventia/RealSecure PAM Module ICQ Server Reply stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as very critical has been discovered in ISS Proventia and RealSecure. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component PAM Module. Executing a manipulation as part of ICQ Server Reply can lead to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2004-0362. The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in ISS Proventia and RealSecure (affected version unknown). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component PAM Module. The manipulation as part of a ICQ Server Reply leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the ICQ parsing routines of the ISS Protocol Analysis Module (PAM) component, as used in various RealSecure, Proventia, and BlackICE products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a SRV_MULTI response containing a SRV_USER_ONLINE response packet and a SRV_META_USER response packet with long (1) nickname, (2) firstname, (3) lastname, or (4) email address fields, as exploited by the Witty worm.

The bug was discovered 03/08/2004. The weakness was presented 03/18/2004 by Briley Hassell-Jack (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0362 since 03/18/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/13/2025).

It is possible to download the exploit at immunitysec.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34023 (ISS Protocol Analysis Module ICQ Parsing Stack Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at iss.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2446. In this case the pattern |05 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8497.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15543), Exploit-DB (168), SecurityFocus (BID 9913†), OSVDB (4355†) and Secunia (SA11073†). Additional details are provided at eeye.com. See VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
