Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 allows remote attackers to bypass Protected Mode and create arbitrary files by leveraging access to a Low integrity process, as demonstrated by Stephen Fewer as the third of three chained vulnerabilities during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2011.

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 03/10/2011 as MS11-057 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1347. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1100 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55787 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100098 (Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 Multiple Unspecified Vulnerabilities (Deprecated)).
