A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Balbir Singh libcgroup up to 0.37. This affects the function parse_cgroup_spec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in the parse_cgroup_spec function in tools/tools-common.c in the Control Group Configuration Library (aka libcgroup or libcg) before 0.37.1 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted controller list on the command line of an application. NOTE: it is not clear whether this issue crosses privilege boundaries.
The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2011 as Bug 678107 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1006 since 02/14/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68218 (Oracle Linux 6 : libcgroup (ELSA-2011-0320)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155459 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libcgroup (ELSA-2011-0320)).
Upgrading to version 0.32.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65877), Tenable (68218), SecurityFocus (BID 46729†), Secunia (SA43611†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025158†).
