Balbir Singh libcgroup up to 0.37 cgre_receive_netlink_msg access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

The cgre_receive_netlink_msg function in daemon/cgrulesengd.c in cgrulesengd in the Control Group Configuration Library (aka libcgroup or libcg) before 0.37.1 does not verify that netlink messages originated in the kernel, which allows local users to bypass intended resource restrictions via a crafted message.

The weakness was presented 03/22/2011 as Bug 680409 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1022 since 02/14/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52691 (Debian DSA-2193-1 : libcgroup - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155459 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libcgroup (ELSA-2011-0320)).

Upgrading to version 0.32.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65881), Tenable (52691), SecurityFocus (BID 46578†), Secunia (SA43611†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025157†). See VDB-56907 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
