Multiple buffer overflows in Apple Type Services (ATS) in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.7 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a document that contains a crafted embedded Type 1 font.
The weakness was released 03/22/2011 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as HT4581 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0176. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52754 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119064 (Apple Mac OS X v10.6.7 and Security Update 2011-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2011-03-21-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10952.
