Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.12.1 (Software Library). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function addmntent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-16. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The addmntent function in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.13 and earlier does not report an error status for failed attempts to write to the /etc/mtab file, which makes it easier for local users to trigger corruption of this file, as demonstrated by writes from a process with a small RLIMIT_FSIZE value, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-0296.
The weakness was presented 04/09/2011 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 688980 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-1089. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.004.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75680 (openSUSE Security Update : ncpfs (openSUSE-SU-2011:0985-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
