A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome 16.0.912.77 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing in the library libxslt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. libxslt, as used in Google Chrome before 17.0.963.46, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 02/08/2012 by Collin Payne (miaubiz) with Chromium Development Community (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3970 since 10/01/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
