CA Total Defense prior R12 Web Service cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in CA Total Defense. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Web Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The management.asmx module in the Management Web Service in the Unified Network Control (UNC) Server in CA Total Defense (TD) r12 before SE2 sends a cleartext response to unspecified getDBConfigSettings requests, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain database credentials, and subsequently execute arbitrary code, by sniffing the network, related to the UNCWS Web Service.

The weakness was presented 04/18/2011 by Andrea Micalizzi (rgod) (Website). The advisory is shared at support.ca.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1655 since 04/06/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version R12 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11070.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66727), SecurityFocus (BID 47356†), Secunia (SA44097†), SecurityTracker (ID 1025353†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31664†).
