CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected is the function _ctl_do_mpt_command. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the _ctl_do_mpt_command function in drivers/scsi/mpt2sas/mpt2sas_ctl.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.38 and earlier might allow local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via an ioctl call specifying a crafted value that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 05/03/2011 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is shared for download at patchwork.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-1494 since 03/21/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/05/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1870 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67081 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0833)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120077 (VMware ESXi 3.5 Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67081), SecurityFocus (BID 47185†), Secunia (SA46397†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31584†).
