CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function is_gpt_valid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the is_gpt_valid function in fs/partitions/efi.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.38 and earlier allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (OOPS) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted size of the EFI GUID partition-table header on removable media.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 05/03/2011 by Timo Warns (Website). The advisory is shared for download at spinics.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1577 since 04/05/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1870 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75556 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2011:1221-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350721 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2011-026).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66773), Tenable (75556), SecurityFocus (BID 47343†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025355†).
