Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function bcm_release. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The bcm_release function in net/can/bcm.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39-rc6 does not properly validate a socket data structure, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted release operation.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 05/09/2011 as Bug 698057 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1598. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/07/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1876 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68418 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2011-2019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165567 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:031)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
