Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function raw_release. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The raw_release function in net/can/raw.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39-rc6 does not properly validate a socket data structure, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted release operation.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 05/09/2011 as Bug 698057 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1748. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1876 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55028 (Debian DSA-2240-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165567 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:031)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67413), Tenable (55028), SecurityFocus (BID 47835†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31899†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-55922, VDB-56640, VDB-61069 and VDB-61066. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
