A vulnerability was found in ICONICS GENESIS32 up to 9.21. It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality in the library GenVersion.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the SetActiveXGUID method in the VersionInfo ActiveX control in GenVersion.dll 8.0.138.0 in the WebHMI subsystem in ICONICS BizViz 9.x before 9.22 and GENESIS32 9.x before 9.22 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string in the argument. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2011 by Scott Bell (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2089 since 05/13/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/31/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119257 (Iconics Genesis32 and Bizviz Multiple Stack Overflow).

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19777.
