Details
A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.0 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) subsystem in OpenSSL 1.0.0d and earlier, when the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) is used for the ECDHE_ECDSA cipher suite, does not properly implement curves over binary fields, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to determine private keys via a timing attack and a lattice calculation.
The weakness was shared 05/31/2011 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1945. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/05/2024). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75596 (openSUSE Security Update : libopenssl-devel (openSUSE-SU-2011:0634-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121226 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and Security Update 2013-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-06-04-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67507), Tenable (75596), SecurityFocus (BID 47888†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31880†).
