Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Ruby on Rails up to 2.0.1 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
The cross-site scripting (XSS) prevention feature in Ruby on Rails 2.x before 2.3.12, 3.0.x before 3.0.8, and 3.1.x before 3.1.0.rc2 does not properly handle mutation of safe buffers, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct XSS attacks via crafted strings to an application that uses a problematic string method, as demonstrated by the sub method.
The weakness was presented 06/30/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at weblog.rubyonrails.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2197 since 05/31/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55556 (Fedora 15 : rubygem-actionpack-3.0.5-3.fc15 (2011-8580)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12515 (Ruby on Rails Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Filter Security Bypass Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
