A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark up to 1.6.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function elem_cell_id_aux. Off-by-one error in the elem_cell_id_aux function in epan/dissectors/packet-ansi_a.c in the ANSI MAP dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.8 and 1.6.x before 1.6.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via an invalid packet.

The weakness was disclosed 08/23/2011 as Bug 723215 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2698. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58849 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2012:0509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
