Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function inet_diag_bc_audit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The inet_diag_bc_audit function in net/ipv4/inet_diag.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.3 does not properly audit INET_DIAG bytecode, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel infinite loop) via crafted INET_DIAG_REQ_BYTECODE instructions in a netlink message, as demonstrated by an INET_DIAG_BC_JMP instruction with a zero yes value, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-3880.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 08/29/2011 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 714536 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2213. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1988 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56645 (Ubuntu 11.04 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1246-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165276 (SUSE Security Update for kernel (openSUSE-SU-2012:0206-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (56645), SecurityFocus (BID 48333†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32535†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-60830, VDB-60062, VDB-57785 and VDB-57763. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
