The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer underflow in the l2cap_config_req function in net/bluetooth/l2cap_core.c in the Linux kernel before 3.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a small command-size value within the command header of a Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol (L2CAP) configuration request, leading to a buffer overflow.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/29/2011 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 716805 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2497 since 06/15/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1941 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55583 (Fedora 15 : kernel-2.6.38.8-35.fc15 (2011-9130)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195236 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ec2 Vulnerabilities (USN-1239-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
