Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function si4713_write_econtrol_string. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in the si4713_write_econtrol_string function in drivers/media/radio/si4713-i2c.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.4 on the N900 platform might allow local users to cause a denial of service or have unspecified other impact via a crafted s_ext_ctrls operation with a (1) V4L2_CID_RDS_TX_PS_NAME or (2) V4L2_CID_RDS_TX_RADIO_TEXT control ID.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 09/06/2011 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2700 since 07/11/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1996 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56130 (Debian DSA-2303-2 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165574 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:038)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (68779), Tenable (56130), SecurityFocus (BID 48804†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34086†).
