The skb_gro_header_slow function in include/linux/netdevice.h in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.4, when Generic Receive Offload (GRO) is enabled, resets certain fields in incorrect situations, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) via crafted network traffic.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/06/2011 as Bug 726552 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-2723. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1996 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79280 (RHEL 5 : rhev-hypervisor (RHSA-2011:1408)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.
