Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32.51 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The Performance Events subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.1 does not properly handle event overflows associated with PERF_COUNT_SW_CPU_CLOCK events, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted application.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2012 by Vince Weaver (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2918. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 903 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76639 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2012:0333)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350731 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2011-016).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69208), Exploit-DB (17769), Tenable (76639), SecurityFocus (BID 49152†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33472†). The entries VDB-4662 and VDB-58437 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
