A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in CMU Cyrus IMAP Server up to 2.4.4. Affected by this issue is the function index_get_ids of the file index.c of the component IMAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The index_get_ids function in index.c in imapd in Cyrus IMAP Server before 2.4.11, when server-side threading is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted References header in an e-mail message.
The weakness was shared 09/14/2011 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.cyrusimap.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3481. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
