ISC BIND 9.9.0/9.9.1 race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in ISC BIND 9.9.0/9.9.1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. This manipulation causes race condition. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2012-3868. Furthermore, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND 9.9.0/9.9.1 (Domain Name Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the ns_client structure management in ISC BIND 9.9.x before 9.9.1-P2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption or process exit) via a large volume of TCP queries.

The weakness was published 07/24/2012 by Kevin Sheehan and Anand Buddhdev (shutdown) with Infoblox & RIPE as cve-2012-3868 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at isc.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3868 since 07/06/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 60120 (ISC BIND 9 Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166508 (OpenSuSE Security Update for bind (openSUSE-SU-2013:0666-1)).

Upgrading to version 9.9.1-P2, 9.8.3-P2, 9.7.6-P2, eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (60120), SecurityFocus (BID 54659†), OSVDB (84229†), Secunia (SA50020†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027297†). Additional details are provided at threatpost.com. Similar entries are available at VDB-5874 and VDB-57404.
