Summary
A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in ISC BIND up to 9.9.1-P1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2012-3817. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.1-P1 (Domain Name Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
ISC BIND 9.4.x, 9.5.x, 9.6.x, and 9.7.x before 9.7.6-P2; 9.8.x before 9.8.3-P2; 9.9.x before 9.9.1-P2; and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R7-P2, when DNSSEC validation is enabled, does not properly initialize the failing-query cache, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) by sending many queries.
The weakness was shared 07/24/2012 by Einar Lonn with IIS.se as cve-2012-3817 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at isc.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3817 since 06/29/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74702 (openSUSE Security Update : bind (openSUSE-SU-2012:0971-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185064 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02823)).
Upgrading to version 9.9.1-P2, 9.8.3-P2, 9.7.6-P2, eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74702), SecurityFocus (BID 54658†), OSVDB (84228†), Secunia (SA50020†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027296†).
