A vulnerability has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.1-P2 (Domain Name Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Assertion Error Resource Record Parser. The manipulation as part of a RDATA Query leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. ISC BIND 9.x before 9.7.6-P3, 9.8.x before 9.8.3-P3, 9.9.x before 9.9.1-P3, and 9.4-ESV and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R7-P3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and named daemon exit) via a query for a long resource record.
The weakness was published 09/12/2012 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4244 since 08/10/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The RDATA query has to be greater than 65535 bytes.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68625 (Oracle Linux 6 : bind (ELSA-2012-1268)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185064 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02823)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at isc.org.Proper firewalling of udp/53 (dns) is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
