ISC BIND up to 9.9.1 DNS Resource Record RDATA numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in ISC BIND up to 9.9.1. Impacted is an unknown function of the component DNS Resource Record Handler. The manipulation of the argument RDATA leads to numeric error. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2012-1667. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.1 (Domain Name Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component DNS Resource Record Handler. The manipulation of the argument RDATA with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

ISC BIND 9.x before 9.7.6-P1, 9.8.x before 9.8.3-P1, 9.9.x before 9.9.1-P1, and 9.4-ESV and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R7-P1 does not properly handle resource records with a zero-length RDATA section, which allows remote DNS servers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash or data corruption) or obtain sensitive information from process memory via a crafted record.

The weakness was presented 06/04/2012 by Dan Luther with Level 3 Communications (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at isc.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1667 since 03/15/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The ISC documents: "This issue primarily affects recursive nameservers. Authoritative nameservers will only be impacted if an administrator configures experimental record types with no data. If the server is configured this way, then secondaries can crash on restart after transferring that zone. Zone data on the master can become corrupted if the zone with those records has named configured to manage the DNSSEC key rotation."

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68680 (Oracle Linux 4 : bind (ELSA-2012-2028)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185064 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02823)).

Upgrading to version 9.6-ESV-R7-P1, 9.7.6-P1, 9.8.3-P1 or 9.9.1-P1 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling 53 (dns). The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12442.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68680), SecurityFocus (BID 53772†), OSVDB (82609†), Secunia (SA49323†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35250†). packetstormsecurity.org is providing further details.
