Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ISC DHCP 4.2.0/4.2.1/4.2.2/4.2.3/4.2.4 (Network Management Software). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in ISC DHCP 4.2.x before 4.2.4-P1, when DHCPv6 mode is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and daemon exit) via a crafted client identifier parameter.
The weakness was published 07/24/2012 by Markus Hietava with Codenomicon CROSS Project as CERT-FI Advisory on ISC DHCP as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cert.fi. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3570 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74718 (openSUSE Security Update : dhcp (openSUSE-SU-2012:1006-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 4.2.4-P1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
