ISC DHCP up to 4.2.4 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in ISC DHCP up to 4.2.4 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple memory leaks in ISC DHCP 4.1.x and 4.2.x before 4.2.4-P1 and 4.1-ESV before 4.1-ESV-R6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by sending many requests.

The weakness was released 07/24/2012 by Glen Eustace with Massey University as CERT-FI Advisory on ISC DHCP as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at cert.fi. The public release was coordinated with ISC. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3954 since 07/11/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69605 (Amazon Linux AMI : dhcp (ALAS-2012-115)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350632 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for dhcp: ALAS-2012-115).

Upgrading to version 4.2.4-P1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77183), Tenable (69605), SecurityFocus (BID 54665†), OSVDB (84253†) and Secunia (SA50017†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-5880 and VDB-5882. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
