Off-by-one error in the GIF decoder in Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.57 on Mac OS X and Linux, and before 21.0.1180.60 on Windows and Chrome Frame, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted image.
The weakness was disclosed 07/31/2012 by Atte Kettunen (Trev) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as Stable Channel Release as not defined changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2849 since 05/19/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61505 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (ce84e136-e2f6-11e1-a8ca-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.57 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
