A vulnerability has been found in Novell GroupWise 8.0 (Groupware Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function NgwiCalVTimeZoneBody::ParseSelf in the library gwwww1.dll of the component GroupWise Internet Agent. The manipulation of the argument TZNAME with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the NgwiCalVTimeZoneBody::ParseSelf function in gwwww1.dll in GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) in Novell GroupWise 8.0 before HP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TZNAME variable in a VCALENDAR attachment in an e-mail message, related to an "integer truncation error."
The weakness was published 10/07/2011 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0333. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/19/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56634 (GroupWise Internet Agent < 8.0.2 HP3 iCalendar TZNAME Property Heap Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119450 (Novell GroupWise iCal Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
