A vulnerability has been found in Ubisoft Uplay Plugin and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The web browser plugin for Ubisoft Uplay PC before 2.0.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs via the -orbit_exe_path command line argument.
The weakness was shared 07/29/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as [Uplay PC] Patch 2.0.4 - Security fix as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at forums.ubi.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4177 since 08/07/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121038 (Ubisoft Uplay ActiveX Control Arbitrary Code Execution).
Upgrading to version 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19227.
