A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function napi_reuse_skb. The napi_reuse_skb function in net/core/dev.c in the Generic Receive Offload (GRO) implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.38 does not reset the values of certain structure members, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a malformed VLAN frame.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 10/23/2011 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1478. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2043 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79278 (RHEL 5 : rhev-hypervisor (RHSA-2011:0439)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165558 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:019)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
