A vulnerability was found in GNOME empathy up to 2.91.91.1 (Messaging Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function theme_adium_append_message of the file empathy-theme-adium.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the theme_adium_append_message function in empathy-theme-adium.c in the Adium theme in libempathy-gtk in Empathy 3.2.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted alias (aka nickname) in a /me event, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-3635.
The weakness was released 10/23/2011 by Alex as Bug 662035 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.gnome.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4170 since 10/22/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56680 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 10.10 / 11.04 / 11.10 : empathy vulnerabilities (USN-1250-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195225 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Empathy Vulnerabilities (USN-1250-1)).
