Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component NULL Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "Asynchronous NULL Object Access Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 08/14/2012 by Derek Soeder with eEye as MS12-052 as confirmed article (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-2521 since 05/09/2012. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61527 (MS12-052: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2722913)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100125 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-052)).
Applying the patch MS12-052 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
