The weakness was shared 08/14/2012 by Cris Neckar with Google Chrome Security Team as MS12-056 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2523 since 05/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61531 (MS12-056: Vulnerability in JScript and VBScript Scripting Engines Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2706045)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100125 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-052)).
Applying the patch MS12-056 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12504.
