Wireshark up to 1.6.2 dissect_infiniband_common null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark up to 1.6.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function dissect_infiniband_common. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_infiniband_common function in epan/dissectors/packet-infiniband.c in the Infiniband dissector in Wireshark 1.4.0 through 1.4.9 and 1.6.x before 1.6.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was disclosed 11/03/2011 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala with Red Hat Security Response Team as Bug 750645 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-4101. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56689 (Wireshark 1.4.x < 1.4.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120893 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2/2a Missing).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71091), Tenable (56689), SecurityFocus (BID 50481†), OSVDB (76769†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33749†). The entries VDB-4442, VDB-4456, VDB-59432 and VDB-59431 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
