The Remote Administration Protocol (RAP) implementation in the LanmanWorkstation service in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly handle RAP responses, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (service hang) via crafted RAP packets, aka "Remote Administration Protocol Denial of Service Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 08/14/2012 by Yamata Li with Palo Alto Networks as MS12-054 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1850 since 03/22/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61529 (MS12-054: Vulnerabilities in Windows Networking Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2733594)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90829 (Windows Networking Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS12-054)).
