OpenStack Compute 2011.3 Manifest path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenStack Compute 2011.3 (Cloud Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Manifest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in OpenStack Nova before 2011.3.1, when the EC2 API and the S3/RegisterImage image-registration method are enabled, allow remote authenticated users to overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted (1) tarball or (2) manifest.

The weakness was released 12/23/2011 by David Black (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4596 since 11/29/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57387 (Fedora 16 : openstack-nova-2011.3-13.fc16 (2011-17111)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195172 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Nova Vulnerability (USN-1305-1)).

Upgrading to version 2011.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (57387), SecurityFocus (BID 51047†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34032†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
