Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in TYPO3 (Content Management System). This issue affects the function unserialize of the file view_help.php of the component Backend Help System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
view_help.php in the backend help system in TYPO3 4.5.x before 4.5.19, 4.6.x before 4.6.12 and 4.7.x before 4.7.4 allows remote authenticated backend users to unserialize arbitrary objects and possibly execute arbitrary PHP code via an unspecified parameter, related to a "missing signature (HMAC)."
The weakness was disclosed 08/15/2012 by Felix Wilhelm as TYPO3-CORE-SA-2012-004 as not defined bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at typo3.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3527 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:view_help.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61735 (Debian DSA-2537-1 : typo3-src - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 4.5.19, 4.6.12 or 4.7.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at typo3.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77791), Tenable (61735), SecurityFocus (BID 55052†), OSVDB (84773†) and Secunia (SA50287†). The entries VDB-5985, VDB-5988, VDB-62029 and VDB-62028 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
