etc/inc/certs.inc in the PKI implementation in pfSense before 2.0.1 creates each X.509 certificate with a true value for the CA basic constraint, which allows remote attackers to create sub-certificates for arbitrary subjects by leveraging the private key.
The weakness was disclosed 01/03/2012 by Florent Daigniere with Matta Consulting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trustmatta.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4197 since 10/26/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. Upgrading to version 1.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
