Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark. The impacted element is an unknown function of the file epan/dissectors/packet-stun.c of the component STUN Dissector. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2012-4292. There is not any exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/packet-stun.c of the component STUN Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The dissect_stun_message function in epan/dissectors/packet-stun.c in the STUN dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.15, 1.6.x before 1.6.10, and 1.8.x before 1.8.2 does not properly interact with key-destruction behavior in a certain tree library, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was released 08/15/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2012-21 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4292 since 08/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71268 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2013-251)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156718 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Wireshark (ELSA-2013-1569)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.15, 1.6.10 or 1.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
