The CIP dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.15, 1.6.x before 1.6.10, and 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was disclosed 08/15/2012 by Ben Schmidt as wnpa-sec-2012-20 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4291 since 08/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
