Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
net/sctp/sm_make_chunk.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34, when addip_enable and auth_enable are used, does not consider the amount of zero padding during calculation of chunk lengths for (1) INIT and (2) INIT ACK chunks, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (OOPS) via crafted packet data.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 02/01/2012 by Eugene Teo as Bug 695383 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1573 since 04/05/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2046 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56640 (USN-1241-1 : linux-fsl-imx51 vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165562 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:026)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66780), Tenable (56640), SecurityFocus (BID 47308†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-30992†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-52270, VDB-56656, VDB-56655 and VDB-56654. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
