A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP/Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. The Microsoft Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) library, as used in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via malformed SSL messages.
The bug was discovered 04/14/2004. The weakness was released 04/13/2004 by John Lampe with ISS X-Force as MS04-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0120 since 02/03/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is assigned to the family Windows, running in the context r and relying on port 443. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90108 (Multiple Microsoft Windows Vulnerabilities (MS04-011)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS04-011 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3486. In this case the pattern |16 03| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2761.
