Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Apache Portable Runtime up to 1.4.3. Impacted is an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0840. In addition, an exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Portable Runtime up to 1.4.3. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
tables/apr_hash.c in the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) library through 1.4.5 computes hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table.
The weakness was presented 02/10/2012 by Moritz Muehlenhoff (Website). The advisory is shared at svn.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0840 since 01/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57955 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : apr (MDVSA-2012:019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73096), Exploit-DB (36669), Tenable (57955), SecurityFocus (BID 51917†) and Secunia (SA47862†). See VDB-4557, VDB-5200, VDB-60221 and VDB-59888 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
