A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Symantec Gateway up to 10.0. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Admin Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) before 10.0 allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators.
The bug was discovered 04/16/2012. The weakness was presented 08/27/2012 by Ben Williams with NGS Secure Research as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0308 since 01/04/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Ben Williams and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 133 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62010 (Symantec Messaging Gateway 9.5.x Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM12-013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12594 (Symantec Messaging Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM12-013)).
Upgrading to version 10.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
