A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). This vulnerability affects the function CREATE TABLE of the component Database Structure Page. The manipulation of the argument Table Name with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the Database Structure page in phpMyAdmin 3.4.x before 3.4.11.1 and 3.5.x before 3.5.2.2 allow remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via (1) a crafted table name during table creation, or a (2) Empty link or (3) Drop link for a crafted table name.
The weakness was disclosed 08/16/2012 by Emanuel Bronshtein as PMASA-2012-4 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at phpmyadmin.net. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4345 since 08/15/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61566 (FreeBSD : phpMyAdmin -- Multiple XSS in Table operations, Database structure, Trigger and Visualize GIS data pages (db1d3340-e83b-11e1-999b-e0cb4e266481)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12592 (phpMyAdmin Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities (PMASA-2012-4)).
Upgrading to version 3.4.11.1 or 3.5.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at phpmyadmin.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
