Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 3.0.36/3.2.22/3.4.4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function madvise_remove of the file mm/madvise.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2012-3511. There is no available exploit. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.0.36/3.2.22/3.4.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function madvise_remove of the file mm/madvise.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple race conditions in the madvise_remove function in mm/madvise.c in the Linux kernel before 3.4.5 allow local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) via vectors involving a (1) munmap or (2) close system call.

The weakness was presented 07/06/2012 by Andy Lutomirski as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3511 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70163 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2013:1292)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166783 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0287-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.0.37, 3.2.23 or 3.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (70163), SecurityFocus (BID 55151†), OSVDB (84904†), Secunia (SA50310†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37493†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com. See VDB-5386, VDB-5571, VDB-5582 and VDB-5656 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
