Format string vulnerability in Advantech/BroadWin WebAccess before 7.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a message string.

The weakness was presented 02/21/2012 by Luigi Auriemma with Information and Communication Security Technology (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0242 since 12/21/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11895 (Advantech/BroadWin WebAccess Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12258.
