Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Help/Support Center. The manipulation as part of a HCP URL leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Help and Support Center in Microsoft Windows XP SP1 does not properly validate HCP URLs, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via quotation marks in an hcp:// URL, which are not quoted when constructing the argument list to HelpCtr.exe.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2003. The weakness was shared 04/13/2004 by Jouko Pynnönen with iDefense as MS04-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0907 since 11/04/2003. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 160 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12205 (MS04-011: Microsoft Hotfix (credentialed check) (835732)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90108 (Multiple Microsoft Windows Vulnerabilities (MS04-011)).
Applying the patch MS04-011 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2753.
